Health care jobs are growing steady in 2012, according to federal data. In January and February of 2012, health care jobs accounted for 1 in 5 new positions. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the healthcare sector added 49,000 new jobs in February, with 28,200 health care jobs in ambulatory services and 15,400 hospital jobs. Last year, healthcare accounted for over 18 percent of all new jobs. No matter how the overall economy is faring, there is always a market for health care services.

Ambulatory Service Health Care Jobs

Physician’s offices and acute medical care providers accounted for 64 percent of new health care jobs in 2011, the BLS says, which ended up translating to 191,400 jobs last year – up from 166.100 jobs in 2010. As Baby Boomers continue to age and health care coverage expands, these positions are expected to grow even more in the coming years.

Information Technology Drives Health Care Jobs Growth

Clinical information technology systems are fueling significant hiring as medical centers upgrade their computer systems and manage data more efficiently. One organization hired nearly 400 people to install and manage these complex IT systems.

Hospitals Employ More Physicians

More physicians are looking to answer ads for health care jobs, rather than start their own private practices. Catholic Health Initiatives hired 1,000 additional physicians over the past 24 months, for example.

Administration Health Care Jobs Skyrocket

Administrators who understand federal mandates, risk / insurance models, and population management are in high demand right now.

According to BLS data:

-          Over 14.2 million people worked health care jobs in February.

-          4.8 million of those jobs were at hospitals.

-          6.2 million of those jobs were in ambulatory services (including 2.3 million doctor’s office positions).

-          The February growth in health care jobs represented 21.5 percent of the 227,000 jobs created overall.

Sales jobs attract naturally energetic, talkative and passionate people. They are often eager to begin working in the field, but they are not content to stay in one place for too long. They are always looking ahead to the next big goal, the next paycheck, and the next position. Here are a few tips for having a successful first year in your first sales job.

  • Do more listening than talking.

Imagine you are interviewing prospective buyers to see that they are a good fit for your company’s products or services. How good would the interview be if it was just all the interviewer talking? Instead, you want to ask the right questions, so the prospect feels that buying is truly his or her own idea – not something forced upon him or her by a pushy salesperson. The best salespeople are good listeners.

  • Focus on making a difference.

The best salespeople don’t fret over getting or losing a sale. Instead, they are focused on problem-solving and finding the best solution for a particular need.

  • Find a mentor.

You may feel like your coworkers are almost like competitors vying for the same prospects, but it behooves you to think of them as mentors. Try to glean as many tips, techniques and tricks from your cohorts as possible. Look for people in professional associations who are willing to show you a few shortcuts or help you move up in the company.

  • Convince yourself to buy first.

If you’re not convinced of the benefits that your own product or service has, then how do you expect to sell to anyone else? If your inner monologue is “off” and you have unresolved reservations, then every rejection will confirm your issues. Often times, it’s just a matter of learning more, understanding how to handle objections, and finding a new way to look at things.

What’s not to love about pharmaceutical sales jobs? You get an outstanding salary with generous bonuses, you work a flexible schedule outside the confines of an office, and you even get access to a company car.  Of course, that’s only part of the story. Pharmaceutical sales jobs can be competitive and difficult to get. Once you’re in, the day-to-day work can either be seen as “challenging” or “frustrating,” depending on how good you are at sales. Here are a few tips for landing (and maintaining) sales jobs in the pharmaceutical industry:

  • Sell yourself.

For every open position, there may be as many as 150 applicants. There are more than 58,000 drug salespeople in the US, so you will have to set yourself apart from the competition if you want to be successful. The best way to get an “in” is to network with other people who are working the sales jobs you want. If you’re a likable friend, you are much more likely to be welcomed into the culture.

  • Exude confidence and a positive attitude.

The meek need not apply to pharmaceutical sales jobs. These positions are for highly gregarious, friendly and resilient professionals. You will need to weather your fair share of rejections – not only applying for work in the first place, but also when you are out in the field trying to peddle the latest and greatest drugs. You want to have people skills like tactfulness and diplomacy.

  • Know your science.

Some jobs require just a BA, while others may prefer an MBA. Either way, you should have a strong understanding and natural aptitude in science. Otherwise, the job can be a living hell. Working in the marketing department of the healthcare industry would be a great place to hop in and get your feet wet.

  • Show an interest.

Before your interview, research the company’s products and mission statement. Have an idea of what you’re applying for and how your past work may have prepared you to be an asset for the company. You should expect several different interviews before getting hired.

  • Find your motivation.

It can be lonely working out in the field all alone. Often, the biggest challenge is keeping yourself psyched up and motivated. You will also need to know where your time and energies are best spent. Most importantly, you need the mental stamina to remain as sharp at 6 p.m. as you were on the day’s first call.

PLAN YOUR IT JOBS PATH EARLY IN YOUR CAREER

The happiest and most successful people working in IT jobs are the ones who had the foresight to know where they ultimately wanted to wind up in their careers. They may have set their sights on CIO, Senior Programmer or Systems Architect, but the point is: they had a vision. They set goals to work toward that vision from day one. Sure, they probably had to work the help desk for months just like everybody else, but they assessed their aptitudes, found mentors, investigated career options and created plans to get ahead in life.

Generally speaking, one of four scenarios will play out over the years in your IT job:

  1. A select few wind up working IT jobs that they absolutely love that are akin to what they set out to do. These people were either very determined or very lucky. They mapped out their careers early and sought help along their career development path. This is the ideal scenario for you!
  2. Some people map out their dream IT jobs, but find out that it wasn’t quite what they expected. In fact, some people end up hating the job once they get there! At the very least, they can say they attained what they set out to do, which is quite an achievement. Yet, happiness may come in working with a different company that has a better corporate culture. Or it may require working for oneself. In some cases, people burn out in what they are doing, but they are able to set new goals and redirect their careers toward something more enjoyable.
  3. Some people try their darndest, but still can’t get the IT jobs they set out for. These people need not feel ashamed for trying their best. As Aerosmith says, “Life’s a journey, not a destination.” It’s possible the end goal is still achievable, but the steps taken to get there need to be tweaked. It’s a good idea to speak with a manager, supervisor or mentor to find out if you are capable of reaching your goal if you stay the course. In some cases, you may find your natural aptitudes lie elsewhere.
  4. Then there are people working IT jobs that they dislike or that fall far short of their expectations because they didn’t establish a plan. It may not necessarily be too late. Look into adding skills, certifications and education to make your resume more desirable. Ask about cross-training opportunities in different departments and find out what kind of internal openings might help you get one step closer to your goal.

As you prepare to look for finance jobs, you may be wondering which U.S. cities are world-renowned for your course of study. Everyone talks about Wall Street as the finance capital of the world. Here you’ll find the headquarters of the largest investment banks like Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch. Just about every financial enterprise has some sort of presence in “the city that never sleeps.” If you like culture, nightlife, entertainment and sporting events, you will not be disappointed! However, New York is also the most expensive U.S. city to live in and the big city vibe is not for everyone. Here are three other cities where you will find ample finance jobs, without leaving the shores of America.

  • Boston, Massachusetts – Boston is one of the least expensive places to find finance jobs, according to Mercer’s Cost of Living Index. Where 1 is the most expensive city, Boston ranks #99. Boston is home to well-stocked asset manager finance jobs, as well as positions for money managers at Fidelity and Putnam. Residents love Boston because it’s close to beaches and mountains, full of history and home to many successful sports franchises.
  • Chicago, Illinois – If you’re looking for finance jobs in futures and derivatives trading, you may want to consider the Windy City – home of the Chicago Board of Trade and Chicago Mercantile Exchange. You can also find work at a large bank or brokerage firm. Residents love Chicago’s music scene, nightlife, restaurants, and sports teams. Mercer ranks Chicago 88 for affordability, so it’s a little more expensive than Boston.

San Francisco, California – You can find finance jobs with Charles Schwab or Franklin Templeton Investments in “the finance capital of the West.” Venture-capital jobs, especially for technology startups, are popular here. Banks and brokerages are plentiful, although it’s a 78 on the Mercer Index, so it’s more expensive to live here than in Boston and Chicago. Most people automatically assume that any math whiz can easily land one of the finance jobs listed online. However, senior financial manager Mitch Pisik says that the “accounting / financial aspect of the job is the floor, not the ceiling.” To be truly successful in finance jobs, one must possess the following additional competencies.

-          Communication Skills: Finance jobs require you to break down complex subject matter into digestible data that non-finance people, board members and corporate executives can understand.

-          Relationship Management Skills: You’ll be working with all different personality types, so having a hand in psychology is a good thing. Finance jobs in the advisory sector particularly require a person who can ascertain an individual’s needs and recommend financial products that meet those needs, but any job will come with its fair share of managers, coworkers, and subordinates.

-          Marketing / Sales Skills: Finance jobs demand that you digest what your firm’s niche markets and strengths are. You will need to communicate your knowledge, but also your passion, in a compelling way if you are to help others manage their money in the long-term.  

-          Organizational Skills: Finance jobs have you managing projects that require attention to detail, time management skills, and superb organization. You need an analytical mind that can solve problems before they arise and a professional demeanor that is far from sloppy.

-          Problem-Solving Skills: Finance jobs are often very high-pressure, so you will need to be able to cope with potentially stressful situations. Look for ways to help others and be a team player if you want to be recognized for your skills in this arena.

-          Technology Skills: The more shortcuts, functions and programs you know, the easier your job will be. Finance jobs may have you working on Microsoft Excel, Quicken, or other financial software programs.

In essence, you can think of your role in finance as being a skilled interpreter – a combination of wisdom, professionalism and the ability to translate complex ideas to others.

SCHOOL ADMINISTRATIVE JOBS

Anyone who has been through the school system has probably thought, at some point or another, “I could probably do a better job!” After all, school administrative jobs pay very, very well. Principals make anywhere from $85,000/year for elementary school to $97,486 for senior high school. College deans make over $100,000/year and Chief Academic Officers make an average of $158,000. Naturally, pay varies by geographic location and experience, but these salaries aren’t too shabby.

School administrative jobs are complex and require very intelligence, competent individuals to oversee the programs. Academic administrators set educational standards and achievement goals, in addition to outlining school policies and procedures. They oversee teachers, counselors, librarians, coaches, janitors and support staff. They speak with parents, keep records, prepare budgets, and work with teachers to develop curriculum standards. They observe teaching methods, conduct reviews and deliver performance ratings.

To work in school administrative jobs, you must be comfortable with taking on significant amounts of responsibility. Coordinating with parents, students, members of the community, government officials and other staff members can be rewarding, but also extremely challenging. Your performance is often based on the performance of others, so you need to know how to motivate and persuade people to adopt your standards. Over a third of people working in school administrative jobs put in more than 40 hours per week and come in at night and weekends to supervise extracurricular activities. Most administrators also work year-round.

Education requirements usually involve prior experience as a teacher or assistant administrator. In most public schools, administrators need a master’s degree in education, and some individuals also have their doctorate or specialized degree in education administration. Private school administrative jobs can be secured with only a bachelor’s degree in some cases, although the pay is usually lower.
