5 Things to Do if Your Workplace is Starting to Layoff

In this economy, getting laid off is something that can be very common. There might be rumors circulating, and people are going crazy about which people are going to get laid off. Trust me, it is a frightening thing that no one wants to face. If you are afraid for your job―here are 5 ways to prepare to get laid off.

1. Start looking

If you are hearing that there are going to be layovers―start looking for a job now. Even if you don’t get laid off―you will be able to have other options if you do. You may even find another job that you would do even better at. However, be careful when you are looking for jobs. Make sure that you make it clear to potential job offers that you are looking. This may give them more reason to get more benefits. If you get a better offer, this could be a win-win for you and the company that is planning lay offs.

2. Don’t spread rumors

As tempting as it might be, don’t be part of the rumors. You might want to sit around the water cooler and discuss people that might get laid off. If someone approaches you with new about the layoffs, politely ask them not to tell you. If the rumors are about you, this may give you more motivation to work harder. Show your boss, and your company, that you are someone that they can’t do without.

3. Start networking

If you want to start looking for another job, start networking with other professionals around you. You can explain that you are looking for another job, and they can help you. Don’t be afraid to ask around for jobs―there are people hiring!

4. Pack up

If you think that you are someone that may be susceptible to layoffs, be prepared. Don’t make a scene about it. The people that get laid off are often those that have done something that is not inline with the company. Make sure that you have everything ready if you are laid off. This means backing up and storing files that you have worked on.

5. Don’t brown nose

It may be extremely tempting to start flattering your boss. Keep in mind that everyone is going to be doing the same thing. Instead of trying to outdo everyone, why don’t you beat everyone at their own game? Instead of flattering your boss and wasting your time, make sure that you are doing your job the best. Your boss will notice and will not want to lay you off.
