Accounting Jobs In The Insurance Field

Jobseekers in search of accounting jobs would do well to consider the insurance industry as a potential option. Insurance, by nature, is financially complex – which makes it an exciting place for accountants to do business. Every day, there are thousands of small transactions and it takes a real numbers-cruncher to make sense of individual customer relations.

What Do Accounting Jobs In The Insurance Industry Entail?

Most people seeking accounting jobs will begin at a large insurance firm as an entry-level accountant trainee. Typically, new grads or people who have been out of school for less than five years who possess at least a Bachelor’s in accounting are groomed for the job. Trainees will then work as analysts and graduate to supervisory roles or train in other departments to find their special niche.

Helpful Certifications For Accounting Jobs

Often times, companies will sponsor certification courses for new trainees. Helpful certifications for insurance industry accounting jobs include:

· Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU)

· Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU)

· Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC)

· America’s Health Insurance Plans certification

· LOMA International certification

How To Get Around A Lack of Industry Experience

Naturally, many recruiters would like to fill their accounting jobs with people who already have experience in the insurance field, but they often have positions that are supervised by other accountants, where an industry newcomer would be welcome. Most higher-up positions are recruited from competing firms or large public accounting firms that deal in insurance.

Are There Any Accounting Jobs For People Without A College Degree?

Actually, many people with high school diplomas and good math / computer skills are able to get into certain types of accounting jobs with insurance firms. For instance, they may work as “finance assistants” who work on travel and expense data and general accounting tasks. Some positions include work in the company’s call centers as well.

Outlook

The insurance industry employs about 2.3 million people, so there are many accounting jobs to be filled.
