MANY CUSTOMER SERVICE JOBS FILLED BY PRE-SCREENING

National pet specialty retailer PetCo has just announced that they’ll be enhancing their recruitment strategy to ensure that they hire the most passionate people to aid their customers. They’ll be expanding their use of PeopleAnswers’ pre-employment assessment software to more than 1,100 stores across the country, according to Charlie Piscitello, Senior VP of Human Resources.

Initially, the company used PeopleAnswers software in 150 or so stores, but after learning that there was a significant decrease in turnover, they decided to place more emphasis on the tool. According to their website, PeopleAnswers is used by stores like Michaels, Macy’s, PetSmart, HSBC, Ralph Lauren, Neiman Marcus, Radio Shack, Panera, Dunkin Donuts and Hertz – to name a few employers offering competitive customer service jobs.

Perhaps you are nervous about passing the pre-screening test when applying for customer service jobs. Don’t fret too much. Here is what to expect:

  • Some questions will be no-brainers that are designed to make sure you have the most basic aptitude before you arrive for an interview. You might be asked whether you can count to ten or how to make change, for example.
  • The second type of question will be personality-related. They might ask if you like crowds or if you fare well without supervision. They might wonder if you take frequent breaks at work or if you’re the type of person who finds more work to do after you’ve finished what’s required. Your best bet is to answer honestly and make sure that similarly-grouped questions are answered in a consistent manner.
  • You will also likely find situation questions – like how you’ll react to an angry customer who is yelling. Most of these are common sense questions.
  • You may also find moral questions, like whether you know people who steal or if you have ever cheated on a test.
