Unemployment: A Means or Menace?

Unemployment, as the word implies, always seems to be a menace for those who are victimized by it. People take it as an indication of doom as they are unable to continue their life in its current condition and have to go through with some necessary changes. For instance, when a person’s income is significantly reduced due to getting laid off from a job, he will have to cut down on even the daily expenses, and the luxuries would seem completely unattainable. Although all the negative sides of this phenomenon are pretty much convincing, most people fail to see the positive aspect of this.

Instead of being viewed as something that ends your career and puts a hold on your dreams, unemployment should be seen as something that gives you the opportunity to actually follow your dreams. For instance, you may have wanted to become a musician when you were younger, but were unable to make a career out of it due to immense and mounting financial responsibilities. When you get fired or quit from a job, you will have a great chance to pursue this dream. Since you are probably going to have a great deal of free time at your hands, even after taking into account the time spent in job search, you should invest it in something that is bound to yield some results. You may write and compose a song or two and upload them on the internet. You could be surprised at the appreciation you are able to get.

If you were always reluctant in initiating your own business, unemployment may give you all the time in the world to go over this option. Although you will be facing a lot of financial constraints, you will probably have some money from savings. Instead of spending this money on the luxuries you are used to having, you should invest it in a small-scale business. The internet has emerged as the prime source of marketing, and this is where most businesses promote their products and services without incurring any cost or very minor costs. You just have to spend a small amount of money in setting up your business, and once you start getting customers, all the effort will seem worthwhile.

As you can see from the above examples, unemployment is not necessarily a menace. It is a menace only for those who do not do anything productive during the time that they do not have any job. On the other hand, those who see this as an opportunity to grow and explore new horizons will definitely see this as a means for something bigger and better in their lives.
